Taste of Times Square

Solstice in Times Square

WHAT: The five-member jazz ensemble, "Kalaparush and The Light", leads a New Orleans-style "funeral procession" through the streets of Times Square, bidding farewell to Winter and a welcome to Spring, sponsored by the Times Square Alliance.

WHERE: Procession begins at the Times Square Information Center, 7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets.

WHEN: Thursday, March 20, beginning at 10am

DETAILS:

On Thursday, March 20th, Spring returns to the Broadway - and we have the urge to welcome it with a song. Just as traditional New Orleans jazz bands mark a funeral with lively music, we will celebrate the symbolic death of winter and rebirth of spring in true Big Easy style.

The Kalaprush and the Light jazz ensemble will begin their funeral dirge at the Times Square Information Center and, in accordance with tradition, will culminate in a high-energy, uptempo musical celebration welcoming the birth of spring.

Performers Include:

Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre - Tenor Sax

Jesse Dulman – Tuba

Will Connell – Alto Sax

Smidge Malone - Trumpet

Warren Smith Jr – Drums

Kevin Louis – Trumpet

Pallbearers, adorned with flowers, will lead the procession with a mock-coffin containing a snowman carrying him to his final resting place (at least until next year). Flowers and packets of seeds will be distributed to passers-by in honor of the birth of spring.

Following the march, the jazz musicians will perform a mini-concert on the island at the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets until approximately 12 noon (rain location is the Times Square Information Center on 7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets).

WHAT IS A "JAZZ FUNERAL"?

According to New Orleans Online, the Jazz Funeral is believed to be derived from the African tradition of celebrating most aspects of life, including death, with music.  As brass bands became popular in America during the early 18th century, tradition merged with contemporary tastes.  After observing the celebrations of the jazz funeral, renowned New Orleans Jazzman Sidney Bechet stated, "music here is as much a part of death as it is of life."
