WHAT: On the anniversary of the end of World War II, the Times Square Alliance invited couples from all generations and of all types to celebrate again in Times Square, in honor of the US Armed Forces and in celebration of the universal ideals of peace, love and hope.
A special invitation was extended to couples whose kisses bridge boundaries, be they religious, political, racial, national or otherwise, as well as veterans of WWII, returning veterans from the Iraq War, and couples in costumes commemorating the original 1945 kiss.
WHEN: Saturday, August 14th.
Doors opened at 10:00am. Program began at 11:00am.
10:00am - 2:00pm PUCKER UP FOR PEACE!

The Kiss-In event was sponsored by Maybelline NY and featured a guest-appearance from Dancing with the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Maybelline New York makeup artists were on hand to provide lip touch-ups and help consumers get camera ready. Professional photographers were on-site to capture post-makeover shots of participants for a chance to be featured on a digital billboard in the heart of Times Square.

11:30am: Reenactment of the legendary lip-lock
Hundreds of people recreated the famous victory kiss between a U.S. sailor and nurse, captured forever on the cover of LIFE Magazine. |

12:00pm: The fun continued until 2pm with Maybelline NY makeup artists providing lip touch-ups getting you camera ready for a chance to be featured on a digital billboard in the heart of Times Square.

Hundreds gather in the middle of Times Square to celebrate peace, love and hope and salute the men and women of our Armed Forces
Times Square on August 14, 1945
August 14, 1945 – a crowd of 750,000 people, buzzing with hope and excitement, had gathered in Times Square, eyes fixed on the Times Tower. At 7:03pm, the words finally blazed across the news zipper: “OFFICIAL – TRUMAN ANNOUNCES JAPANESE SURRENDER.” Times Square exploded in a collective cry of joy and relief. By 10pm, the crowd had swelled to more than 2 million, as New Yorkers flooded the Square, a generation uniting to celebrate the conclusion of the 20th Century’s most devastating conflict and express their love of life and belief in the future.
August 14, 2010 - On the anniversary of this historic occasion, the Times Square Alliance leads another celebration in Times Square, in honor of the US Armed forces and in celebration of the universal ideals of peace, love and hope.
Scores of couples of all nationalities, colors, ages, religions and genders will gather in Times Square for a smoochfest on the very spot where a spontaneous but seminal smacker symbolized the euphoria surrounding the end of World War II and captured the hope for a peaceful future.
For over 100 years, Times Square has filled a communal need as a place to share in national celebrations, remember historical events, and watch the news of the world unfold in real time. Even in this modern era of high-tech media and communications technology, Times Square endures as a gathering place for people – a nexus where the personal and the global intersect. Therefore, in a time of war and peace, the Times Square Alliance issues a call to arms – and lips! – as we celebrate and reenact a moment of hope and renewal crystallized in the famous 1945 image of a sailor and a nurse kissing passionately in the heart of Times Square.
