Artist Tom Christopher celebrates Times Square with a series of painted digital prints on canvas inspired by the Crossroads of the World’s eclectic and frenetic streetscape. Christopher describes his work as a "mission to capture the narrative, the beauty and the magnetic pull of the epicenter of this modern city."
The paintings capture the mood of Times Square through aggressive and complimentary colors over skeletal black lines. When asked by his friends "Tom, why don’t you just go paint something else for a change?" the artist responds, "Don’t like to paint anything else. And where else would you find this full contrast of life: the crushing and the timid, the brutal and the lyrical along with full staccato activity and little islands of calm where you’d least expect it? I consider myself lucky when I take the train in and see Times Square open up like a reward for a long journey."
The work is juxtaposed with a series of provocative quotes from sources as diverse as F. Scott Fitzgerald to a U.S. Army field survival guide. One piece, depicting a phalanx of taxi cabs approaching Father Duffy Square, is a accompanied by and observation by novelist E.B. White: “New York is nothing like Paris; it is nothing like London; it is not Spokane multiplied by sixty, or Detroit multiplied by four.”
Christopher’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions, selected collections and public installations throughout New York City and the world, including the Galerie Barbara von Stechow, David Findlay Galleries, the AXA Gallery, the New York Historical Society Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, Germany’s Art Cologne and Osaka’s Galerie Tamenga, among others.
