The Revitalization of Father Duffy Square and the TKTS Booth
Recent visitors to Times Square may have noticed a massive construction
project taking place right at the heart of the Crossroads of the World. Theatre-lovers flocking to their beloved TKTS Booth at the intersection of Broadway
and 7th Avenue for discount tickets to everything from RENT to Slava's
Snowshow have been obliged to make a detour to the booth's temporary
home at the nearby Marriot Marquis hotel. So what's going on? Why the
cranes and backhoes?
Well, the fact is that the next step in the development of Times Square as a
great public space is underway.
This ambitious plan calls for the physical redesign of Duffy Square, located in
the center of Times Square and home to the popular TKTS booth. Once
completed, this space will not only enhance Times Square's attractiveness,
but will also dramatically improve the area's pedestrian environment.
Conceived as a public amphitheatre at the Crossroads of the World, the new
design will provide the best seats in the house to watch the greatest show on
earth - Times Square.
