POLICY, PLANNING AND DESIGN SUSTAINABILITY INTERN

The Alliance seeks an energetic and committed graduate-level intern to work with the Policy, Planning and Design (PPD) team to develop a sustainability program for the residents, businesses, and property owners of Times Square.  This program will require research and planning for a variety of different initiatives--including (but not limited to) a bike awareness campaign, research into existing local and federal green incentive programs and the creation of an online environmental resource guide for businesses and residents.  The internship will also provide exposure to the department’s other planning and policy projects that are integral to the operation and mission of the organization.  These include real estate research, public space planning, and indicator tracking.  The Alliance will sponsor a number of events this summer, and it is policy of the organization that all employees may be asked to provide support on the day of a particular event.

TSA Office Sustainability Plan

In the spirit of thinking globally and acting locally, the PPD Intern will coordinate with Alliance staff to develop a sustainability program for internal office practices.

Bike Awareness Program

With the launch of the Department of Transportation’s Bike Month this May, the Alliance is preparing to raise awareness of existing resources for bike commuters in the Midtown area.  Additionally, the Alliance plans to bolster nearby infrastructure through the addition of bicycle racks and coordination of both indoor and outdoor bike parking.

Green Program & Incentive Research

  1. Study Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030 and its proposals and prepare a report on how the Alliance can support that plan.
  2. Research green efforts by BIDs and other community organizations throughout New York City and prepare a series of recommendations for the Alliance to implement.
  3. Research and evaluate other existing programs and incentives designed to encourage local businesses and property owners to reduce their carbon footprint and prepare a series of recommendations for the Alliance to provide to its constituents.

Communication Strategies

In addition, the intern will work with members of the PPD and Communications teams to develop a strategy to publicize these findings to property owners, residents, employees and businesses in the area.   This may take the form of documents, events, seminars, direct mailings or web-based content.

Skills

In addition to having enthusiasm for public policy and city government, a qualified intern will also possess excellent communication, writing and analytical skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is essential.

Timing

The three-month internship will start in early July, with the possibility of extension through the fall.
