Release Date: May 02, 2013
(NEW YORK, N.Y.)—To celebrate NYCxDesign, New York City’s inaugural citywide event to showcase and promote design of all disciplines, the Times Square Alliance is launching two exclusive design and architecture tours. The tours, departing from the Times Square Museum & Visitor Center, will feature Times Square’s hidden design and architectural assets, offered May 10 and 11, as well as a history of Times Square’s iconic neon signs, offered May 17 and 18.
Led by two local historians, the walking tours are an exercise in identifying the many strains of design and architecture that compose Times Square’s visual cacophony. In “Chaos By Design,” architectural tour guide Matt Postal will take participants through several generations of Times Square design, from ornamented European-style theaters of Broadway to Renzo Piano’s new incarnation of the New York Times building to the adapted landmarked buildings that unite the present with the past. In “All Lit Up,” New School professor Kathleen Hulser will conduct an archaeology of Times Square’s signage, describing how Times Square’s commercial canvases came to be and what role they have served in pushing forward American advertising.
For cultural tourists and locals independently curious about the history of design at New York’s most iconic crossroads, an exclusive self-guided tour, entitled Hot! Live! Design! A Guide to Art+Architecture+Design, is downloadable here as well as launching via a specially designed website on May 10. The site will be optimized for mobile phones so visitors to Times Square can access the tour directly from their phones.
