Times Square Alliance and Athleta Host Free All Day Yoga Fest to
Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year and Salute the Sun and Start of Summer

Tune in and Practice from Around the World at TimesSquareNYC.org and Athleta.com

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) — The Times Square Alliance announced today that the 11th annual Solstice in Times Square will take place on Friday, June 21st. The Times Square Alliance and title sponsor Athleta, the premium fitness and lifestyle apparel brand for women, will mark the longest day of the year with five free “Mind Over Madness” yoga classes and a yoga village from 7:30am to 9pm. Thousands of yoga enthusiasts will be challenged to find peace, tranquility and transcendence in one of the world’s busiest and most frenetic places, Times Square.

Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance and co-founder of the event, said: “Solstice is an experiment in balance: The sun standing still in the sky on the longest day of the year, and thousands of yogis standing still, and being still, in the middle of the world’s busiest crossroad. It’s a metaphor for calming the mind amidst the madness of modern life.”

“Come share your radiance, be as brilliant as the sun,” said Douglass Stewart, co-founder of Solstice in Times Square.

On June 21st, yogis of all skill levels and ages have the opportunity to participate in five free outdoor yoga classes throughout the day and visit a yoga village with booths, giveaways, and activities. Taking place on the Broadway Plazas in Times Square the classes include:

  • Early morning yoga at 7:25am featuring veteran instructor, acupuncturist and Athleta model athlete Drisana Carey with special pre-class meditation by Tao Porchon-Lynch, 94 years-young and founder of the Westchester Institute of Yoga
  • Mid-morning yoga at 10am with Paula Tursi of Reflections Yoga in NYC
  • Lunchtime Bikram yoga at 1pm taught by Donna Rubin of Bikram Yoga NYC along with special guests
  • Late afternoon yoga at 5:30pm taught by Colleen Saidman – the “First Lady of Yoga” – and her husband Rodney Yee
  • Evening yoga at 7:45pm led by Douglass Stewart, co-founder of Solstice in Times Square

The first 1,200 pre-registered participants to arrive for each class will receive yoga mats and gift bags, compliments of Athleta, while supplies last. Event attendees will also have the chance to browse Athleta’s Summer collection, have fun in the photo booth, and snag giveaways at the Athleta booth in the yoga village. Athleta will also host three yoga fashion shows throughout the day, before the 1pm, 5:30pm and 7:45pm classes, where customers and yoga instructors will hold yoga poses as they showcase the latest Athleta yoga apparel. Visit www.TimesSquareNYC.org to pre-register and for more details.

“Athleta is excited to co-host the Summer Solstice in Times Square event and harness the power, beauty and spirit of our collective yoga practices to salute the sun and welcome Summer,” said Tess Roering, Athleta’s vice president of marketing. “We’re absolutely thrilled to partner with Drisana Carey – a devoted yogi and powerful athlete – to offer yogis an amazing early morning class, plus truly honored to have yoga veteran and Athleta Sponsored Athlete Tao Porchon-Lynch start the annual event with a meditation.”

To extend the peace and tranquility nationwide, Athleta stores will hold free yoga classes on June 21st led by local instructors, plus will give away one free Athleta yoga outfit and commemorative “Solstice in Times Square”-branded yoga mats. The Times Square Alliance and Athleta will stream the event live (powered by Livestream) on their websites at www.TimesSquareNYC.org and on www.athleta.com, so that yogis across the country and the world can join the class. Tampax® Pearl® Active will also be on site to provide attendees with the confidence to thrive in “active spotlight moments” –when all eyes are on you– by launching their Facebook search for #AwesomelyActive girls; hosting a yoga demonstration, capturing memories in their photo booth and providing the opportunity to meet the ultimate active girl, inspirational surfer Bethany Hamilton. Event attendees will be hydrated by Glaceau smartwater®.

To celebrate Solstice in Times Square, many Times Square area hotels are offering discounted rates and other specials to participants traveling to NYC for the event. The Alliance is partnering with Yoga Journal to reach yoga enthusiasts on and off the mat. Additional sponsors include Tampax Pearl Active,

LUNA® will offer participants the opportunity to experience delicious and nutritious rewards from an on-site vending machine. All yogis nationwide have an opportunity to win the Feed Your Strength vending machine for their office through the LUNA Facebook page (www.facebook.com/luna). The contest will be open through June 30, 2013.
