The Official Countdown Begins on Toshiba Vision Screen Atop One Times Square
with 30 Days Until Global Celebration at the Crossroads of the World
Times Square, N.Y. - The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, co-organizers of Times Square New Year’s Eve, today kick off the official countdown to the world-famous celebration. In honor of the 30-day mark, the Toshiba Vision screen atop One Times Square and directly beneath the New Year’s Eve Ball will countdown each day, every six minutes, as the New Year approaches.
The event organizers today announce a new effort with the Associated Press to launch the AP-Times Square New Year’s Eve Poll that will recall the past year’s events and highlight the public’s expectations for the new year. The poll will capture the public’s opinion about global events and milestones in news, sports, entertainment and pop culture. The nationally representative poll will meet AP’s strong methodological standards, producing a scientifically sound look at how Americans viewed 2013.
On December 31, for the third year in a row, revelers in Times Square will see a year-end highlight video of the most memorable moments of 2013 presented by AP Archive, the film and video archive of AP. The video, which will showcase compelling news footage captured by AP journalists around the world, will also be available on the Times Square New Year’s Eve world pool feed and webcast free for broadcast networks and digital outlets on December 31.
“New Year’s Eve is a chance for the whole world to look at the past year and reflect on our biggest triumphs, challenges and tragedies,” said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance. “Working with AP will allow us to build upon a poll that we have been conducting for years and ask a range of questions about what will be remembered from 2013.”
Ted Mendelsohn, vice president of commercial and digital markets at AP, said: “We look forward to seeing the year’s most memorable moments on the Toshiba screen as crowds from around the world look back on 2013. And we are excited to join forces with the Times Square Alliance on this polling effort to gauge public sentiment going into the year ahead.”
