The iconic Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is getting a complete makeover just in time for 2014, as all 2,688 Waterford Crystals are replaced with a brand new design. The new crystals–featuring this year’s new “Gift of Imagination” design–will be installed on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at One Times Square (42nd Street and Broadway).
The final crystal was designed by Coraliz, a 12-year-old patient at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, who sketched her idea of what imagination looks like in the form of a rose that represents beauty and positivity.
The 2,687 other crystals, designed and crafted by Waterford artisans and installed by Landmark Signs, feature a series of intricate wedge cuts that appear to be endless mirrored reflections of each other, inspiring the imagination with a kaleidoscope of colorful patterns.
Imagination can be found in its most pure and authentic form in children, making St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital the perfect partner for this year’s installation. The new 2014 crystals are the first pattern in the new 10-year “Greatest Gifts” series. This was the last New Year’s Eve concept from beloved Waterford designer, Jim O’Leary, who passed away earlier this year.
The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment are the co-organizers of Times Square New Year’s Eve. For more information, please visit TimesSquareNYC.org/NewYearsEve.
