New York, NY (December 20, 2011) -- The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, co-organizers of New Year’s Eve in Times Square, announced today that revelers around the world will get to experience the Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebration via a six-and-a-half-hour, commercial-free webcast of the event. Last year’s webcast was seen by hundreds of thousands of viewers representing 181 countries across the globe. This year’s webcast, produced in partnership with Livestream, will cover all the action in Times Square from the Ball Raising ceremony at 6 p.m. EST, to performances by platinum-selling musical artists to hourly practice countdowns to the spectacular Ball Drop and midnight celebration. Additional features will include interviews with revelers who make the journey to Times Square to be part of the global celebration, behind-the-scenes interviews with the people who produce New York City’s largest annual celebration, a live Facebook and Twitter chat with viewers around the world, and the story of how the party started in Times Square in 1904.
Thanks to a custom-designed widget, the webcast will be available across the Internet, on blogs, news sites and social media platforms. The Event Organizers and Livestream are offering free Times Square 2012 webcast widgets of varying sizes for bloggers, webmasters and digital media outlets to embed as a source of fun and entertaining content to enhance New Year’s Eve programming on their own sites customized for their communities.
Last year’s webcast was streamed live on more than 12,500 sites. This year, the Times Square 2012 webcast will again be streamed live on multiple websites including TimesSquareNYC.org, Livestream.com/2012, TimesSquareBall.net, and many other websites. Additonally, consumers will be able to access the webcast on mobile devices, as well as through the Official Times Square Ball App, whose newest version debuted this week for Apple and Android devices.
Whether at home or at the party, our worldwide online audience will be able to watch, chat and participate in the live Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration. Further details on the features of the webcast are divided through four separate storylines that develop throughout the night. The storylines are as follows:
ONE WORLD REVEALED - tells the story behind the million revelers who make the pilgrimage to Times Square to be part of the global celebration at the Crossroads of the World. The co-hosts will seek out revelers from across the globe to discover their personal stories and share their energy and excitement to be celebrating the New Year in Times Square
WHAT IT TAKES – tells the story behind the Broadway curtain of actually producing New York City’s largest annual celebration through time-lapse videos, voice-over narrations, animations, and interviews with performers, event staff, producers and directors of key departments. The co-hosts and worldwide audience will discover not only the tremendous amount of work and state-of the-art technology but also the extraordinary personalities involved in the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration. The worldwide audience will be encouraged to ask questions from cabling to confetti, staging to pyrotechnics, video production to Ball Dropping; and the co-hosts will find the answers!
CELEBRATE COMMUNITY – Tells the story of the international audience participating in this global celebration at the Crossroads of the World. Viewers from around the world interacting with each other via Facebook or Twitter chat.
TIMES SQUARE – Tells the story behind Times Square and its world famous New Year’s Eve celebration. The party started here in 1904 with over 200,000 revelers celebrating the New Year. Today, Times Square is famous not only for New Year’s Eve but also the bright lights of Broadway, the streetscape of spectacular signs, and huge public gatherings throughout its history. The co-hosts and worldwide audience will be entertained by fascinating tales of Times Square told by the people working and living in Times Square.
