Couples Can Renew Their Vows on the Red Steps, Bask on Aruba’s Heated Pop-up Beach and interact with a Larger than Life Heart, Made from NY and NJ Boardwalk Boards Salvaged from Hurricane Sandy

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – This Valentine’s Day, thousands of New Yorkers and visitors looking for romance in New York City need to look no further than the Crossroads of the World. Free of charge, couples can renew their vows and declare their love on the iconic Red Steps, lounge on Aruba’s heated pop-up beach while enjoying hourly trip giveaways to the One happy island, and experience Brooklyn-based design firm Situ Studio’s larger than life Heartwalk sculpture made out of boardwalk materials salvaged from New York and New Jersey during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Couples can end their evening by experiencing artist Tracey Emin’s dazzling visual valentine on over fifteen of the largest digital signs in Times Square just before midnight.

These romantic activities are part of “Free Love in Times Square” – a promotion throughout the month of February filled with steamy offers, special shows, and romantic deals designed to keep love hot during the cold winter months. All couples, whether they have been married a few months or fifty years, are invited to say “I do” again. Sweethearts from across the river and around the globe can celebrate their passion and declare their love by renewing their vows on the Red Steps in the heart of Times Square. Captain Arnold, a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain and wedding officiant, will lead the 6:00 p.m. ceremony, which will be broadcast live in Times Square on the American Eagle Times Square Digital Billboard and webcast live at TimesSquareNYC.org

Participating couples will also receive a chance to win a second honeymoon to Aruba, simply by sharing their story of why they most deserve a second honeymoon to the One happy island, where they’ll enjoy a four night / five day stay at the Divi & Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives. Over the last five years, Times Square has hosted an annual heart sculpture to celebrate Valentine’s Day, selecting a special architecture or design firm to create a romantic public art installation in Times Square for all to enjoy. For the first time in this annual competition, Times Square Arts, the public art program of the Times Square Alliance, collaborated with Design Trust for Public Space, to invite emerging architecture and design firms to submit proposals for consideration. This year’s 2013 Times Square Valentine heart sculpture is Heartwalk by Brooklyn-based design firm Situ Studio, which took inspiration from the collective experience of Hurricane Sandy and the love that binds people together during trying times. The sculpture is officially sponsored by the One and Only Cheerios®, follow at #cheerioslove.

Using boardwalk boards salvaged during Sandy’s aftermath—from Long Beach, New York; Rockaways, New York City; Sea Girt, New Jersey; and Atlantic City, New Jersey—Heartwalk begins as two ribbons of wooden planks that fluidly lift from the ground to form a heart shaped enclosure in the middle of Duffy Square. The slatted construction, illuminated from within, provides varied views of the interior as visitors move around the perimeter of the installation. Visitors can enter the installation itself and literally stand in the heart of the world’s greatest city.

Situ Studio’s Heartwalk, will be unveiled on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, and remain on view until March 10, 2013. Visitors can post photos of their visit to Instagram via #HeartwalkTSq or at #cheerioslove.

Each night, Times Square becomes a digital art gallery through dazzling visuals on select billboards and newsstands with Midnight Moment, organized and supported by the Times Square Advertising Coalition in partnership with Times Square Arts.  For February’s program, Tracey Emin, one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists, created I Promise To Love You, comprised of six written love messages made of neon. Every show begins at 11:57pm with a "countdown" that signals the start of the 3 minute nightly presentation. s[edition], the leading platform used by the worlds most recognized artists to distribute art digitally, worked directly with Emin to bring this project to life.
