Times Square: Then and Now

Music & Live Entertainment

For more than a century, Times Square has been a center for music and the arts -- the crossroads where musicians have come to find the perfect instrument, rehearse, sign contracts, perform and record. Times Square was the home of the music publishing industry -- also known as "Tin Pan Alley", which shaped American music during the first half of the 20th Century. The Brill Building on Broadway and 49th Street was well known as the creative center of the music industry where songwriters for Broadway, Hollywood and radio converged.

Today, the neighborhood continues to be a magnet for musicians, music lovers and the music industry, and is home to a wide range of related businesses and organizations, from the Broadway theatre to live music venues to recording studios to major music entertainment companies, such as BMG Music and MTV.
