Mission and Vision of Times Square Arts
Times Square Arts collaborates with contemporary artists to experiment and engage with one of the world's most iconic urban places.
Times Square Arts is a laboratory for contemporary art in the public realm - a place where ideas are tested and new possibilities explored. We work with artists and cultural institutions to create dialogues with Times Square and all of its physical and mythological manifestations. Through the Square's electronic billboards, public plazas, vacant areas and popular venues, and the Alliance's own online landscape, Times Square Arts invites leading contemporary creators to help the public see Times Square in new ways. Times Square has always been a place of risk, innovation and creativity, and the Arts Program ensures these qualities remain central to the district's unique identity.
Our submission process considers solicited and unsolicited applications. All initial Letters of Interest are reviewed by internal staff at the Times Square Alliance to determine plausibility and relevance to Times Square. If successful, applicants will be asked to submit a Full Proposal which is reviewed by a Committee consisting of arts leaders, stakeholders and city agency partners.
Individuals interested in submitting a general project proposal should follow this process:
- Submit a Letter of Interest for internal staff at the Alliance to review for project feasibility. The Letter of interest should be submitted via an online portal which can be found here.
- After the Letter of Interest has been reviewed and approved, Alliance staff will respond with feedback and criteria considerations to the artist.
- After feedback has been given by the Alliance, a Full Proposal should be submitted via an online portal which can be found here.
- Full Proposals are reviewed by a Review Committee of advisors consisting of significant arts leaders, artists and city officials.
To contact Times Square Arts staff at any point during the process, please call (212) 452-5203 or email email@example.com.
Criteria and special consideration
Each proposal will be reviewed against artistic and strategic criteria for the program. The initial Letter of Interest must take the following core values into consideration: Collaborative, Responsive to Place, Boundary-pushing, Conversational, Transparent. Please review the details of the mission, vision and core values of the program.
We work in partnership with cultural institutions, festivals and district stakeholders to best realize ambitious collaborations that make use of the district’s distinctive assets. The majority of our proposals will come through those networks of cultural partners. Individual artists may approach Times Square Arts; however, they should address how they will supply the insitutional structure that is needed for ambitious collaborations.
Individual artists who wish to submit digital art proposals for Midnight Moment: Digital Art Gallery may review the criteria here. Please note that all submissions must have a high quality master. Consideration must also be given to how the work will read as a digital moving image display as well as a work on its own.
