Encore Ovation is a celebration of the importance of artistic expression as we age. It is an evening to help Encore Senior Center grow its arts programming and to increase social connection among its members and residents. More than 40 percent of Americans over 65 regularly experience feelings of loneliness; these feelings can increase health risks and cause serious health problems, both of which deter seniors from aging successfully in place.

Encore has long known that the arts are vital to community, companionship, and health. Since the global pandemic began, social isolation has become an even greater issue among vulnerable seniors, who are denied the company of family, friends, and colleagues as they shelter in place. Encore has helped its community stay creative and socially connected through music, dance, visual arts, and creative writing, and volunteers have helped seniors to find comofort through movies, singalongs, or a good book.

This year, Encore will be honoring Chita Rivera and the Times Square Alliance. Chita Rivera is a legendary Broadway actress, singer, and dancer — a triple threat whose stage career spans seven decades. She is a ten-time Tony Award nominee and a two-time winner and received the 2018 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Her devotion to her craft and her triumph in overcoming a devastating leg injury truly exemplify the healing power of the arts. The Times Square Alliance is being honored in part for connecting Encore seniors to artist Christine Wong Yap through Times Square Arts' Times Square Public Artist-in-Residence program. Wong Yap worked with eleven seniors to create the exhibit How I Keep Looking Up, which was unfurled on Flag Day in June 2021 and were on display in the heart of Times Square until August.
