COUNTDOWN TO NYE
The Times Square New Year's Eve 2019 Charity Honoree is the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom and the safety of journalists around the globe. For over 30 years, they have been defending the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal.
CPJ’s advocacy and campaigns helped journalists around the globe in 2018. CPJ’s advocacy contributed to the early release of at least 80 imprisoned journalists, and helped secure convictions in the murders of six journalists in 2018. Engaging with UN, the EU, and on the Hill in Washington, CPJ raised the cases of countless journalists targeted for their work.
In 2018 CPJ traveled to report on and advocate for journalists in at least 28 countries, and provided direct emergency support to more than 100 journalists under threat, including in places like Venezuela, Uzbekistan, and Syria. CPJ’s Emergencies Response Team published safety advisories with critical information for journalists covering hotspots and facing urgent safety concerns all over the world.
