Jack Goldstein's The Jump, digitally remastered for the billboards in Times Square, will launch just before midnight on Thursday, August 1st and play nightly 11:57pm - midnight throughout the month.  Midnight Moment is a presentation of the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts.  This month's program is presented in partnership with The Jewish Museum.  This film and other works by the artist are on view in JACK GOLDSTEIN × 10,000 at The Jewish Museum, 5th Ave at 92nd St, through September 29, 2013.

In the 1970s, a group of young artists began appropriating images from mass media to explore and critique popular culture. Works like Jack Goldstein’s brief 1978 film The Jump introduced a new language of picture making.  In The Jump, Goldstein used the innovative animation technique of rotoscoping to show a leaping diver, his form a blur of red and sparkling gold, performing a somersault and disintegrating into fragments.

JACK GOLDSTEIN × 10,000  is the first American retrospective of Canadian-born artist Jack Goldstein (1945-2003).  Goldstein was a key figure in the Pictures Generation and a peer of such celebrated figures as Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Sherrie Levine, and James Welling, among others. Enthralled by mass culture, the Pictures Generation artists took photography, film and performance in new directions, and expanded the stylistic vocabulary of painting and drawing by appropriating images from books, magazines, advertisements, television and film. The impressive range of the artist’s imagination is explored through Goldstein’s influential films and paintings as well as his pioneering sound recordings, installations, and writings.  JACK GOLDSTEIN × 10,000 was organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, where it was presented in 2012.

Midnight Moment is the largest coordinated effort in history by the sign operators in Times Square to display synchronized, cutting-edge creative content on electronic billboards and newspaper kiosks throughout Times Square every night. The program, formerly known as Times Square Moment: A Digital Gallery, premiered in May 2012 and is organized and supported by the Times Square Advertising Coalition in partnership with Times Square Arts, the public art program for the Times Square Alliance, with additional partners of participating sign holders and artists.  Past artists featured in the program include Robert WilsonTracey Emin;  Björk and Andrew Thomas Huang,  JR, Ryan McGinley,  Seoungho ChoNeil GoldbergNabil Elderkin, Andrew van der Westhuyzen and Gregory SternVicki DaSilva, Surabhi Saraf, and Elly Cho;  Erika JanungerTakeshi MurataBel Borba with Burt Sun and André Costantini;  Brian Gonzalez (aka Taxiplasm); and Yoko Ono.

Each night, Times Square becomes a digital art gallery through dazzling visuals on select billboards and newsstands. Every show begins at 11:57pm with a "countdown" that signals the start of the 3 minute nightly presentation. Content changes monthly; selected works are announced in the weeks preceding the start of a new show as are the exact signs participating in that month's selection.
