Big Love Times Square Masthead 2012

BIGNYC by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)
with FLATCUT_ and Local Projects

February 6 - 29, 2012

Duffy Square, 46th Street and Broadway

More people = more love. A BIG red heart pulses with glowing light in a grove of glass rods. A single person can activate the beating heart, but joining hands with others will make the heart beat even faster to create a brightly burning heart.

BIG♥NYC by BIG  (Bjarke Ingels Group) with FLATCUT_  and Local Projects conducts the flow of people, air and touch to bring its heart to life. The 10-foot tall glowing sculpture consists of 400 transparent, LED lit, acrylic tubes that form a cube around a suspended red heart. The transparent tubes refract the lights of Times Square, creating a cluster of condensed city lights around the heart. The hovering heart will pulsate faster reflecting the chain of human energy in the heart of Times Square.

Now in its 4th year, the Times Square Alliance has hosted an annual heart sculpture to celebrate Valentine’s Day, selecting a special architect to design a public art installation in Times Square for all to enjoy through the month of February. To see previous years' public art installations by Gage / Clemenceau (2009), Moorhead & Moorhead (2010), and Freecell (2011),  please click here.

Through its Public Art Program, the Times Square Alliance brings temporary high-quality, cutting-edge art and performance to Times Square's public spaces, so that it is known globally as a place where ordinary people encounter authentic, ever-changing urban art in multiple forms and media.

Times Square Arts is made possible by the support of the Rockefeller Foundation. This project was made possible by
Think Energy and BRIDES.
